Online safety tips

In today's digital age, ensuring the safety of our children online is paramount. As a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating child trafficking and sexual exploitation, we are committed to providing essential guidance and resources to help protect your loved ones in the virtual world. Here, you'll find expert advice and practical tips to keep children safe from online predators and traffickers, empowering you to create a secure and vigilant online environment for your family.

online safety tips

Keep Personal Information Private

  • Teach children not to share personal information such as full name, address, phone number, school name, or photos with strangers online. Remind them that not everyone online is who they claim to be.

Be Cautious With Social Media

  • Encourage children to set their social media profiles to private and to only accept friend requests from people they know in real life. Remind them to think carefully before posting anything online and to consider how it could be used by others.

Use Strong Privacy Settings

  • Help children configure their privacy settings on social media platforms and other online accounts to restrict who can see their posts and personal information. Regularly review and update these settings as needed.

Avoid Risky Behaviors

  • Remind children to be cautious when engaging in online activities such as gaming, chatting, or joining online communities. Encourage them to avoid interactions with strangers and to report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior to a trusted adult.

Educate About Online Grooming

  • Teach children about the tactics used by traffickers to groom victims online, such as building trust, offering gifts or favors, and exploiting vulnerabilities. Encourage open communication with children about their online activities and any concerns they may have.

Set Boundaries And Guidelines

  • Establish clear rules and guidelines for children's online activities, including limits on screen time, appropriate websites and apps, and acceptable online behavior. Monitor their online activity and have regular conversations about internet safety.

Teach Critical Thinking Skills

  • Help children develop critical thinking skills to evaluate information and online interactions critically. Encourage them to question the intentions of others online and to be skeptical of offers that seem too good to be true.

Know Where To Seek Help

  • Make sure children know how to seek help if they encounter something online that makes them uncomfortable or if they suspect they are being targeted by a trafficker. Provide them with contact information for trusted adults, helplines, and support organizations.

By following these online safety tips and maintaining open communication with children about their online experiences, we can help reduce the risk of child trafficking and exploitation.
