recognizing signs of child trafficking

As a nonprofit organization committed to eradicating child trafficking and sexual exploitation, we understand the importance of awareness and vigilance in protecting our children. This page is designed to educate and inform you about the key indicators of child trafficking, equipping you with the knowledge needed to identify and respond to potential cases. By understanding these signs, you can play a crucial role in safeguarding children and helping us in our mission to end modern slavery.

common indicators

Physical Signs Of Abuse Or Neglect

  • Unexplained injuries, bruises, burns, or scars, as well as signs of malnutrition or dehydration, can be indicators of trafficking.

Behavioral Changes

  • Sudden changes in behavior, such as withdrawal, depression, anxiety, or fear of certain individuals or situations, may signal that a child is being trafficked.

Unexplained Absences From School

  • Frequent absences from school, especially if accompanied by a decline in academic performance or interest in school-related activities, could indicate that a child is being trafficked.

Evidence Of Controlling Relationships

  • Signs of a controlling or abusive relationship, such as a child being accompanied by an older individual who speaks for them or restricts their communication with others, may suggest trafficking.

Involvement In Commercial Sex Or Labor

  • Children who are involved in commercial sex or forced labor may exhibit signs such as having an older boyfriend or girlfriend, being unable to leave a job or situation, or working excessively long hours.

Lack Of Control Over Personal Identification Documents

  • Traffickers often confiscate or control victims' identification documents, such as passports or birth certificates, to restrict their freedom of movement and ability to seek help.

Isolation From Family And Friends

  • Victims of trafficking may be isolated from their family and friends or prevented from contacting them. They may also be discouraged or prohibited from participating in social activities or attending school.

Signs Of Substance Abuse

  • Traffickers may use drugs or alcohol to control and exploit victims. Signs of substance abuse, such as addiction or withdrawal symptoms, may indicate trafficking.

Signs Of Coercion Or Manipulation

  • Children who are being trafficked may exhibit signs of coercion or manipulation, such as being overly submissive or fearful, expressing a lack of autonomy or decision-making ability, or exhibiting signs of Stockholm syndrome.

Visible Tattoos Or Branding

  • Some traffickers use tattoos or branding to mark their victims as their property. Visible tattoos or unusual markings, especially if they are related to specific individuals or groups, may indicate trafficking.

It's essential to be aware of these signs and to report any suspicions of child trafficking to the appropriate authorities or organizations for further investigation and intervention.
